Meet the new committee members
After this year’s Ecohydraulics Symposium, new early career scientists joined the ECoENet committee. We welcome 4 new members: Melina Sattelmeier, Mónica Basilio Hazas, Lina Focht, and Francesca Padoan (from left to right).
Melina is a PhD student at the Division for Fluid and Experimental Mechanics at Luleå University of Technology in Sweden. She is investigating the environmental impacts of pumped hydropower storage plants, particularly in northern Sweden, using hydrodynamic modeling. This includes especially impacts of pumping on thermal dynamics in reservoirs.
Mónica is a researcher at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in the research group of Applied Geology and Modeling of Environmental Systems. She completed her PhD at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany, where she specialized on surface water-groundwater interaction and mixing processes in the groundwater. As a young researcher, she aims to study hydrogeological processes at multiple spatial and temporal scales, ranging from laboratory experiments to regional water management. Among her research topics, she has studied how hydropower-regulated rivers affect groundwater flow and transport, and she is interested in expanding her analysis to include groundwater ecosystems.
Lina works at the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (BAW) in Karlsruhe, Germany. With a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a Master’s in Water Science she is researching in the interdisciplinary field of fish movements and hydraulics. Currently she is working on a project to determine the impact of turbulence and velocity on fish movement in a jet downstream of a slot in a vertical slot fishway.
Francesca is a PhD student at the Hydraulic construction Platform, in the Department of Civil Engineering at EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland. The goal of her research is to build and validate a metapopulation model able to assess the effects that restoration projects can have on the population dynamics of brown trout. Before starting her PhD, she was awarded a master’s degree in geology and technical geology at the University of Padova, Italy. During her master thesis she studied the influence that different meander bend geometries have on the deposition of fine sediments along meandering rivers. To do that she carried out laboratory experiments coupled with image analysis.
ECoENet now consists of the following committee members:
Please reach out to us if you want to actively serve the early careers community!
Recap from ISE-FP 2024
After almost 6 years and 2 online symposia we have finally been able to meet in person again to share and discuss the most recent discoveries that have been made in the field of ecohydraulics and fish passage.
Workshop on career paths and emerging technologies
We were thrilled to host a successful pre-conference workshop for students and early careers. The workshop focused on local challenges, global networking in ecohydraulics and included three great keynotes from Carole-Anne Gillis (GINU), Raphaël Pilon (WSP), and Luiz da Silva (ETH Zurich), providing us with perspectives from both academia and industry.
Furthermore, we discussed and worked together on emerging challenges in ecohydraulics research and practice through interactive group activities. We brainstormed possible future applications of some emerging technologies presented by the keynote speakers to solve real-world problems in the context of an interdisciplinary research project.
Video interview: Ecohydraulics in Asia
In our newest video from our series, Hannah Schwedhelm and Matteo Redana interview Chris Gibbins, Professor of the School of Environmental and Geographical Sciences at the University of Nottingham Malaysia, about the role of ecohydraulic research in Malaysia and in particular the involvement of the public, government and academic sectors in such research. In the interview, Chris shares how he sees the transition from academia to the private or public sector and the way to build a strong network early on in academic research.
Good news: A great impact factor for the Journal of Ecohydraulics
Since 2016, the Journal of Ecohydraulics has been a key outlet for ecohydraulics research. Yet, it has not been attractive to early careers due to a lack of impact factor, which is often needed to fulfill PhD thesis requirements.
Now this has changed! The journal has received its first Clarivate Impact Factor with a value of 4.6, placing it into the Q1 of Water Resources category. Additionally, the Citescore is now 7.1, a substantial increase from 5.4 in 2022. Its rank now is 40/261 in Water Science and Tech (vs. 63/248) = 84th percentile (vs. 74th percentile in 2022), and 69/379 in Civil and Structural Engineering (vs. 88/350) = 81st percentile (vs. 75th percentile in 2022).
If you work in fundamental or applied sciences, if you are a practitioner or policy-maker working in applied environmental management, including seeking innovative solutions to environmental assessment, impacts of and mitigation for existing or new projects, please consider submitting your work to TJoE
